11 dead in Mumbai building collapse, heavy rains continue to lash city

Heavy rain has thrown life out of gear in India's financial capital. Parts of the city and suburbs have experienced heavy rainfall over the last 24 hours.

At least 11 people lost their lives when a three-storey building collapsed amid heavy rain in Mumbai's Malad West locality of Malvani late Wednesday night. 

Seven pulled were pulled out alive from the rubble. A portion of the second and third floor of ground plus three residential building in the area collapsed on the adjacent building.

Heavy rain has thrown life out of gear in India's financial capital. Parts of the city and suburbs have experienced heavy rainfall over the last 24 hours.

The India Meteorological Department has placed Mumbai and neighbouring areas of Thane, Palgarh and Raigad under a red category storm warning.

The first showers brought by the southwest monsoon led to severe water-logging and disruption of local train services for healthcare and essential workers. 

According to the Santacruz observatory data, Mumbai recorded 220.6 mm of rain from between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm on Wednesday. The weather forecast for Mumbai says that the city will continue to experience heavy rainfall till June 15.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday directed the administration to ensure that the accumulated rainwater is drained out at the earliest.

The Mumbai Police has appealed to residents not to venture out of their homes unless necessary and cautioned them against travelling to some of the inundated areas.
