Gujarat: Bhupendra Patel to be the new Chief Minister; succeeds Vijay Rupani

Bhupendra Patel is a BJP MLA from Ghatlodiya Assembly seat and also an ex-chairman of the standing committee of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. 


The BJP legislature party unanimously elected Bhupendra Patel (55) as the new Chief Minister on Sunday. His name was proposed by CM Vijay Rupani, whose resignation from the post on Saturday surprised many.

The decision to appoint Bhupendra Patel was taken in the legislative meeting, in the presence of central observers Narendra Singh Tomar and Prahlad Joshi and party general secretary Tarun Chaug.

"Bhupendra Patel elected as the new leader of BJP Legislative Party," union minister and BJP's Gujarat-in-charge Narendra Singh Tomar said after the party's legislative meeting.

Bhupendra Patel is a BJP MLA from Ghatlodiya Assembly seat and also an ex-chairman of the standing committee of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. He has diploma in civil engineering and is a resident of Shilaj area in Ahmedabad. Patel is trustee in Patidar organizations Sardar Dham and Vishwa Umiya Foundation.

Addressing the media for the first time as CM, Patel said, “I thank Prime Minister Narandra Modi, BJP president JP Nadda and Union home minister Amit Shah for entrusting me.”

The newly-appointed CM of Gujarat, is likely to meet the state governor at 6 pm today and stake claim to form government.

Patel is all set to take oath as the 17th chief minister of Gujarat on Monday, along with some new ministers as the cabinet is also likely to see replacements. Elections are due in the Gujarat by the end of 2022. This reshuffle is being seen as an attempt by the BJP to present a new set of faces to counter any anti-incumbency.
