Former PM Manmohan Singh tests COVID-19 positive, condition stable

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh tested positive for coronavirus disease (Covid-19) on Monday. Singh has been admitted to AIIMS in Delhi for treatment. He is 88.

The veteran Congress leader, who was administered a Covid test after registering a fever, was admitted at around 5 pm.

Best possible care being given to Manmohan Singh, said Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan. 

Followed up on Dr Manmohan Singh Ji’s health with the medical team attending to him at AIIMS, Delhi. His condition is stable.

Dr Singh has received his two vaccine doses (of Covaxin) - the first on March 4 and the second on April 3. Sources said he was shifted to hospital as "a matter of precaution".

The Congress party issued a statement to confirm that Singh has been admitted to the hospital. "Former PM, Dr Manmohan Singh has been admitted to AIIMS. We wish him a full and speedy recovery," the party's official social media handle stated.

The former PM is known to be diabetic and a heart patient. He has undergone two bypass surgeries. Manmohan has a history of heart surgeries.

Wishes for the speedy recovery of the Congress veteran poured in. PM Modi tweeted, “Wishing our former PM Dr Manmohan Singh Ji good health and a speedy recovery.”

Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi wished Singh a "speedy recovery". The country needs "your guidance and advice in this difficult time", he further tweeted.

Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi expressed her concern and prayed for his quick recovery. "I am deeply concerned to learn that Dr Manmohan Singh is unwell & has been hospitalised. On behalf of all of us in the Congress Party I send my good wishes to him for a speedy & complete recovery," Sonia Gandhi said in a message which was shared via Congress' Twitter handle.

"My prayers are with Manmohan Singh ji and his family today, and my deepest respect. May he fight this scourge with all his might and get well soon," Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said.
