While the tribute was apropos, what left the Congress party embarrassed was the photograph used in the Twitter post. It was that of Field Marshal Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw.

The Congress party shot itself on the foot on Saturday when its social media managers made a huge blunder.

Social media was quick to latch on to a Congress Twitter post tweet honouring Field Marshal Kodandera Madappa Cariappa OBE on his death anniversary.

The Tweet said, "Field Marshal Kodandera Madappa Cariappa OBE was the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army and the first Indian to command a battalion. On his death anniversary, we thank him for his valour and leadership during the all-important Indo-Pakistan War of 1947."

While the tribute was apropos, what left the Congress party embarrassed was the photograph used in the Twitter post. It was that of Field Marshal Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw.

Hundreds of social media user reminded the Congress of its blunder following which the party deleted the post. But the damage was already done.

Not knowing national icons is one thing, doesn't the person handling page even know how to read English? Field Marshall Sam Manekshaw's name is written crystal clear on the name badge. How ridiculous. pic.twitter.com/IrcAK5j6ps
