College student says 3 men set her on fire after she resisted rape attempt in UP's Shahjahanpur

Police said that CCTV evidence was being examined closely and her classmates have been questioned.


A college student, who was set ablaze after resisting a gangrape in Uttar Pradesh's Shahjahanpur district, is stable.

The incident came to light when the second-year BA student was found naked and severely burnt, by locals along the national highway in Shahjahanpur.

She was shifted to the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Civil Hospital in Lucknow for further treatment. Doctors treating her said that her condition is stable.

Police said that CCTV evidence was being examined closely and her classmates have been questioned.

Superintendent of Police S Anand said the victim had given a statement that three men tried to rape her in a field near Rai Kheda village on Monday, and when she resisted they doused her with kerosene and set her on fire.

The official further said that college CCTV footage showed the victim reportedly exiting the college campus through a broken wall barely 20 minutes after she entered the college. In this duration, she is seen talking to her friends outside a classroom and then seen heading into a library.
