The remarks were latched on to by the BJP which alleged that the remarks proved that the farmers' protest was politically motivated.

Former Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar triggered a new controversy while passing on the baton of the state unit to Navjot Singh Sidhu on Friday when he remarked that Chief Minister Amarinder Singh handled farmers to head to Delhi to protest against the farmer laws.

Addressing the gathering at Sidhu's inauguration as the Punjab Congress chief, Jakhar said: "BJP leaders are hiding in their homes because farmers are against the black farm laws introduced by the party. If Captain Amarinder had not handled them aptly and sent these farmers to Delhi against the BJP, we would have had to deal with them and their anger in Punjab. This is one of the biggest achievements of our CM."

The remarks were latched on to by the BJP which alleged that the remarks proved that the farmers' protest was politically motivated.

To recall, the Punjab Chief Minister had last year declared that no political party was involved in the farmers' protests and that they were a spontaneous reaction of farmers who were fighting for their future.

The farmers have been camping outside the Delhi borders for eight months protesting against the three contentious agriculture laws.

Despite over 10 rounds of talks with the government, the deadlock over the new laws is yet to be broken with farmers sticking to their demand that the new laws be rolled back.
