The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has accused the Telangana government of providing free transport in rural areas to shut down the schools. The government is closing down more than 4,500 schools.
“The government is closing down as many as 4,637 schools across the state. It has now issued a government order to provide free transport to school children. In fact, the government is shutting down all these schools, citing poor enrolment of students. Hence its decision to provide transport to children, who are studying at these schools, making them go to other schools situated in their neighbouring villages,” TDP politburo member Ravula Chandrasekhar Reddy told the Indian Express.
The schools are being closed down citing the reason that there are not many students enrolling at these schools. Providing transport will not increase the number of students. Instead, it is an idea to shut down the schools in the rural areas and force children to travel to distant places to get an education.
The TDP has alleged that the Telangana government had promised KG to PG education without any fee while campaigning for elections. But now, they are all set to close down the schools and have no intention of providing basic infrastructure and improving conditions of the schools so that more students get enrolled in the schools.
Indian Express reported that 4,637 government schools, 230 engineering colleges and 100 pharma colleges are being closed down in Telangana. The TDP has said that the government has shut down even schools with more than 100 students.
