The Telangana media saw and heard two words a lot in the past week - Akun Sabharwal IPS and drugs. Akun is a 2001 IPS batch officer and the husband of Smitha Sabharwal, Additional Secretary of Telangana CM K Chandrasekhar Rao.
In spite of being an IPS officer, he was a DIG in Law and Order till recently. Then after some transfers he became the Director of Excise and Prohibition and started hunting down criminals.
Akun brought down the big shots of Tollywood in one sweep and unmasked them. There were heroes, heroines and prominent filmmakers amidst the lot. Though drugs have been part of the filmdom for a long time, only Akun was able to unmask them. He revealed the level of drug intake among the wealthy and in the industry. He brought all the big names involved in drugs before the public.
This is what an honest officer gets for unearthing the drug racket in Hyderabad
Akun was born on 4 December 1976 in Patiala. He was from an army background. In the 2001 IPS batch, he was selected for the Assam cadre. But since he married his batch-mate Smitha IAS, he changed his cadre to Andhra Pradesh. He was a dental medicine student and studied BDS in Patiala. During his internship, he wrote civil services and was selected for IPS.
His first posting was in Anantapur but he was chased by factionists there. He then came to Warangal as OSD, then worked as SP in Vizag. When he was the SP, there were 28 encounters between the police and the maoists. He came to Hyderabad and worked as a DSP, then became a DIG in the Hyderabad range, following which CM KCR brought him to the Excise department. However, someone in the government did not like the ways of Akun.
During the separation of Telugu states, there was news that the film industry would leave Hyderabad. But the industry bigwigs maintained good relations with the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government and even after Telangana came into being, they reiterated their decision to continue in Hyderabad.
The enemies of the TRS leaders have now become friends. The leak of names of celebs in the drug racket was not appreciated by the governing body of Telangana. Since no one should weaken their friendship, Akun was sent on a long leave.
