On March 31, K Prithika Yashini became one of the 1028 trainees to complete the one-year course for sub-inspector at the Tamil Nadu Police Academy, and with this, the 25-year-old Yashini became India’s first transgender sub-inspector of police.
For Yashini, this is a great achievement since she had to fight a lengthy legal battle to sit for the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board examination. The board rejected her application on the ground that it does not have a category for 'third gender'.
However, in a landmark decision in 2015, the Madras High Court ruled that the recruitment board must include transgender community members in ‘third category’ that allowed Yashini to sit for the examination.
On March 31, the ceremonial passing out parade of the officers was held at the Academy located in Oonamanchery, Vandalur and the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami handed over the certificates to the newly-minted officers.
After the ceremony, Yashini told reporters that she is happy to complete the training and that her fellow trainees were friendly and cooperative during the training period.
