Tamil Nadu eye camp tragedy: 3 hospital staff sentenced to 1-year imprisonment

Logeswaram has upheld the order of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, (CJM), who had sentenced three persons from the Joseph Eye hospital to a year's imprisonment in the eye camp tragedy in 2008. It is to be recalled that close to 66 villagers from different parts of Tamil Nadu had undergone free cataract surgery at the eye camp organised by the hospital in Perambalur during 2008. Following directions from the Madras High Court, the CBI investigated into the matter and found that the hospital authorities neither followed the standard surgical procedures, nor maintained the operation theater properly in their branch at Perambalur.

It is to be recalled that close to 66 villagers from different parts of Tamil Nadu had undergone free cataract surgery at the eye camp organised by the hospital in Perambalur during 2008. Among those sentenced include the director, administrative officer and a senior ophthalmologist.

Following directions from the Madras High Court, the CBI investigated into the matter and found that the hospital authorities neither followed the standard surgical procedures, nor maintained the operation theater properly in their branch at Perambalur. The judge also upheld the lower court's order that the hospital pay compensation to the tune of Rs 9.85 crore to the victims.
