The Tamil Nadu government informed the Madras High Court on Thursday, September 14, that a total of 33,487 government teachers, affiliated to six unions, were abstaining from work across the state.
The teachers’ strike entered the sixth day on Friday, September 15, to press their demands, including bringing back the old pension scheme in place of the contributory pension scheme, removal of anomalies in the pay structure in the Seventh Pay Commission, implementation of the recommendation of the Eighty Pay Commission, reported the Hindu.
In its affidavit, the state government further said that retired teachers were also working as office-bearers in the unions.
The High Court had pulled up a section of Tamil Nadu government school teachers who are on strike, saying it affected students. The court said that the teachers were responsible for the poor performance of the students in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test.
The Joint Action Council of Teachers Organisations and Government Employees Organisations had called for an indefinite strike from September 7.
There was a slight commotion in Namakkal when the police did not allow the striking teachers and government employees inside the Collectorate for the sit-in stir. They attempted to block the traffic, following which they were allowed inside the Collectorate.
