In a bizarre incident that occurred near Tirupattur last Thursday, a man tied a thali to his brother's bride just a few minutes before his brother was about to do it himself. A man Ravikishan S (name changed) arranged the marriage of his elder son Kumar with a 20-year old girl from Rajapalayam. The marriage was supposed to be held at Bala Murugan Temple at Ilayampatti.
But on the D-day, when Kumar was instructed to tie the thali around his bride's neck, his younger brother pushed him away and tied another Thali, which he had hidden in his pocket, around her neck. Shell-shocked, both the parties realised it too late that the marriage was already solemnised between Velu and the girl. However, the girl's relatives beat Velu up for his misdeed. They insisted that the bride removed the Thali, but to everyone's surprise even she refused to do so.
It was evident by now what had actually happened. Velu and the girl fell for each other the moment they met on the day the former had gone to her house to fix his brother's marriage. The duo had planned each and every move. Kumar, realising the truth, threw the blessed thali in frustration and stormed out of the wedding venue. His whereabouts are yet to be traced.
In a second twist, the girl's family refused to accept the marriage and forcibly removed the thali, taking her to Rajapalayam the same day. But the girl seemed firm. According to local sources, "The girl refused to marry anyone else other than Velu. Her relatives even called Velu and invited him to Rajapalayam. However, he declined saying that the thali he had tied on her had been removed."
However, on Saturday night, the girl's family came to Tirupattur and forced Velu to accompany them to Rajapalayam. No police complaint has been filed against either Velu or the girl's relatives. Kumar too is not to be found.
