Brain dead conductor's organs give lease of life to 5 people in Tamil Nadu

Synopsis

The bus conduction sustained severe brain injury after an accident. He was declared brain dead on May 8.

P Kandasamy sustained severe brain injury after he was knocked down by a speeding two-wheeler while standing near a tea shop at Kuniamuthur area here on May 6. He was rushed to KG Hospital here where a team of specialists and supporting staff started treatment.

However, despite their best efforts the patient could not be brought back to life and he was declared brain dead on May 8, Hospital chairman G Bhakthavatsalam said in a release on May 9. After getting the family's consent, vital organs like the two kidneys, two eyes and the liver were harvested.

The eyes were donated to Aravind Eye Hospital, the liver and one kidney to PSG Hospitals and another kidney to KG Hospital and were later transplanted into the five patients.

Kandasamy is survived by his wife, a government employee, two married daughters and a son, who is into his final year BE course, Bhakthavatsalam said.
