Tokyo Olympics: Sajan Prakash fails to book 100m butterfly semis berth

Synopsis

The Indian swimming suffered a setback in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics on Thursday. Top swimmer Sajan Prakash failed to book his berth in the semis of the 100m butterfly event. Despite finishing second in the heats, his clock speed was too slow to make the cut. 

India suffered a setback in the swimming department at the Tokyo Olympics. Top swimmer Sajan Prakash failed to make the cut in the 100m butterfly event on Thursday, despite finishing second in the heats.

He clocked 53.45 seconds, which was the second slowest heat of all. Meanwhile, the cut-off time was 51.74s. Also, he finished 46th overall among the 55 swimmers, while the top-16 qualified for the semis.

As a result, all the three Indian swimmers (Prakash, Srihari Nataraj, and Maana Patel) are out of contention, while they failed to match their personal best at the event. Prakash also was unable to impress in the 200m butterfly, finishing 24th in the heats.

For Nataraj, had he matched his personal best, it would have been enough for him to seal his semis spot. In the meantime, Maana had finished 39th in the heats of the 100m backstroke, failing to make the cut.
