In what comes as a major setback for India in the boxing department, legendary MC Mary Kom suffered a defeat in the pre-quarters to Colombia's Ingrit Valencia during the Tokyo Olympics. In what was Mary's final Olympics, she was beaten by a close margin of 2-3 in her flyweight bout.
It was an intense battle throughout, as the opening round saw both play it out somewhat defensive, but the Colombian was fast and tried wild swings at the Indian. The second round saw Valencia pull up her ante and increase the frequency of her swings at Mary.
Although the Colombian was fast, the Indian was good at her defence as she juggled through most of the contest, besides landing some of her fatal punches. In the third round, both went at each other, with the Colombian picking up the pace again.
Although Mary tried to land in a few punches, besides maintaining her defence, the Colombian was highly vigilant to avoid most of it. Following the conclusion, it was a tough call for the judges, as Valencia marginally made it through in a 3-2 win over the Indian legend.
With Mary's ouster, three more Indian female boxers continue to be in contention: Simranjit Kaur (lightweight), Lovlina Borgohain (welterweight) and Pooja Rani (middleweight). All three would be in action on Friday.
