Tokyo Olympics: Novak Djokovic loses bronze medal clash to Pablo Carreno Busta

Synopsis

The sport of tennis saw another upset at the Tokyo Olympics after reigning world number one Novak Djokovic of Serbia lost his bronze medal playoff to Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain.

In what should be considered another great upset in tennis at the Tokyo Olympics, Serbia's Novak Djokovic lost his bronze medal playoff to Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta on Saturday. The loss comes a day after he had lost his semis clash to Germany's Alexander Zverev.

The opening set turned out to be intense, but Busta toiled to get the sole break to take the opening set 6-4. The following set was no different, as it turned out to be another head-on clash, with the set moving into the tie-breaker, as the world number one bounced back to square it off 7-6 (8-6), besides even saving a match point.

Meanwhile, in the decider, the Spaniard upped his ante and went hard at the Serbian, as the latter was not willing to give up, saving four match points. In between, frustrations got the better of him as he threw one of his racquets into the empty stand, besides breaking another.

Nevertheless, it was Busta who prevailed to take the final set 6-3. Furthermore, right after the defeat, Djokovic pulled out of his mixed doubles bronze-medal playoff, citing a left shoulder niggle.

"Novak Djokovic withdraws from the mixed doubles bronze medal match due to a left shoulder injury. Ashleigh Barty and John Peers receive a walkover against Djokovic and Nina Stojanovic and win the bronze medal for Australia," announced ITF.
