Tokyo Olympics: Indian rowers finish 5th in men's lightweight double sculls heats, to compete in repechage

Synopsis

Indian rowers were in action as well on Day 1 of the Tokyo Olympics 2020, as the men took part in lightweight double sculls heats. They have finished fifth and would now compete in the repechage round.

Day 1 action of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics continued in the rowing section, as the Indian men took part in the lightweight double sculls heats on Saturday. The pair of Arvind Singh and Arjun Lal Jat competed in the same, finishing fifth and eventually qualifying for the repechage round.

While Arvind was the stroker, Arjun was the bower. Although they were trailing by the 1,500m mark, they sped up during the 500m mark, thus finishing fifth.

However, when it came to heat 2, the duo failed to qualify for the semis, finishing with a time of 6:40.33. Ireland (6:23.74) and Czech Republic (6:28.10) have so far managed to qualify for the semis, while India would compete alongside Poland (6:31.85), Ukraine (6:36.05) and Uruguay (6:42.85) in the repechage.

The repechage round allows the boats to earn a second chance at qualification for the quarters, semis or finals. In the double sculls, the combined weight of two rowers cannot be more than 72.5 kg for men, while for females, it cannot be over 59 kg.
