Tokyo Olympics: Another boxing setback for India, Ashish Kumar ousted by Tuoheta Erbieke

Synopsis

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics has seen the Indian male boxers flutter. In the middleweight category, Ashish Kumar was knocked out by Tuohetan Erbieke of China 5-0 by unanimous judges decision.

There was no relief for Indians, especially in the boxing department, as the Indian male performers kept getting knocked out. On Monday, Ashish Kumar lost his middleweight bout to China's Tuoheta Erbieke 0-5 by unanimous judges decision.

The Chinese won the fight 5-0 in the opening round, despite the Indian looking promising with his reflexes. As for the second round, the Chinese somewhat dominated again, landing blows on the Indian, winning the round 5-0 again.

Consequently, it effectively ruled out any chances of Ashish to bounce back. In the final round, he tried to be aggressive with his punches but looked somewhat demoralised following the opening two rounds that went against him.

Eventually, it was the Chinese who prevailed, winning it 5-0. Ashish became the third Indian male to be knocked out in the opening round of the Games.

On Saturday, Vikas Krishan had lost his welterweight bout to Japan's Okazawa, while Manish Kaushik had lost his middleweight fight to Luke McCormack of Great Britain. MC Mary Kom managed to win her opening flyweight bout to Dominican Republic's Miguelina Garcia on Sunday.
