Shobhaa De, India's veteran author, columnist and novelist, has once again been trending on social media after a harsh tweet against the Indian contingent at the Rio Olympics 2016.

Goal of Team India at the Olympics: Rio jao. Selfies lo. Khaali haat wapas aao. What a waste of money and opportunity.

The above tweet was followed by another Tweet in favour of Abhinav Bindra, claiming him to be India's only hope for a medal. The shooter who was scheduled to compete in the 10 metres air rifle event the same day.

Only hope? Dependable Abhinav Bindra. Aim for gold, champion!

While the 2008 Beijing Olympics gold medalist finished fourth in his final competitive outing for India, he did not hesitate in opposing Shobha's comment.

"That's a tad unfair. You should be proud of your athletes perusing human excellence against the whole world," he replied to the author's tweet even before he thanked his supporters who expressed their gratitude for his international career.

Bindra, who represented India for 18 years, bowed out of a glorious international career with 12 medals that he’s won for India at the Olympics, Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games.

A disappointed Bindra, who missed out on a bronze medal by a whisker, thanked his fans and well-wishers for all the love and support he has received throughout his career across the globe.

Thank you all for your support. I did my best , which was not enough. It's been a good ride !
