VS takes on Pinarayi Vijayan for his second thoughts on Mullaperiyar

Synopsis

After keeping low for a few months, Communist Party of India (Marxist) CPM veteran VS Achuthanandan seems to have taken the latest controversy over Mullapperiyar to take on Pinarayi Vijayan, his party rival and Chief Minister of Kerala.

Reports say that Achuthanandan wrote a letter to state party secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan pointing out that the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's remarks on the Mullaperiyar issue went against the earlier stand taken by the Left Democratic Front (LDF). Hence, the statement by the Chief Minister that the Mullapperiyar Dam is safe enough calls for more clarity, he demanded.

During a visit to New Delhi, Vijayan had indicated a shift in the state’s position on Mullaperiyar dam saying that Tamil Nadu government's report on strengthening the dam structure should not be dismissed and that the apprehensions over the safety of the dam were unwarranted.  He also added that both states should continue talks to solve the issue.
