Synopsis

Student seek removal of college principal  College imposes hefty fines for silly matters like growing nails College is run by Upasana Charitable Society

A nursing college in Kollam has been accused of issuing a directive forbidding female students from closing their doors even while changing clothes. Students allege that college authorities say that they might use cell phones or get involved in homosexual activities if allowed to close doors.

The Nurses Students Union have launched an indefinite strike against alleged intrusion into privacy and caste slur by the college management. They also allege that the management fine them heavily over small issues. Students demand removal of principal.

However, management denied the allegations and said that they have agreed to the demands of the students during a meeting with them.

Students accused principal M P Jessykutty of hurling caste abuses and harassing students belonging to Scheduled Caste. She has also imposed hefty fines for silly matters like growing hair or nails and even for being absent from class.

"Principal imposes fine for all kinds of reasons. Principal and teachers call us lesbians for placing our beds together. We are not allowed to close the door even while changing clothes. They permit us to speak to out parents only twice a week. Students of four batches depend on a single phone to make calls," students said.

They also allege that the management is imposing ₹3, 000 as rent per month and forces them to stay in hostel even if their house is at walkable distance.

"We don't have access to the internet as they say that students will use that facility to watch porn. The principal also has the habit of reading out the portions from personal diaries of girls, before the whole class.

There are reports that college authorities have asked rebelling students to vacate hostel. The nursing college is run by businessman Ravi Pillai and is managed by Upasana Charitable Society.
