Triple talaq discriminatory, need uniform marriage law: Kerala HC

Kerala High Court on Friday observed that triple talaq was discriminatory and underscored the need for a uniform marriage law for all citizens.

The practice of triple talaq discriminates Muslim women in the country, the HC said in a verdict given in three petitions related to the custom of oral divorce. Even Muslim countries are not following triple talaq, it said.

The High Court also directed that the copy of the judgement be forwarded to Union Law Ministry and Law Commission demanding uniform marriage law. The court also dismissed concerns that a common marriage law would be against sharia.
