
The Salem superintendent of police Amit Kumar Singh with folded hands apologised to the parents of the girl who committed suicide after doctored nude pictures of her were posted online by a rejected suitor.
According to a report in The Telegraph, the head of the Salem police, which is now facing serious charges including that of taking bribery, told the Kolkata-based daily that he had apologised in his personal capacity. A police constable attached to the Salem division was suspended on Wednesday.
"I told them I was very sorry for their loss and requested them to understand that the police were doing their best and we would definitely nab the culprit. How can I explain to them, when they are going through so much trauma, that the very nature of cyber crime takes time to unravel? That is the reason I met them personally, shared their grief and said sorry for any misunderstanding or the laxity of some of my officers," SP Amit Kumar Sing told The Telegraph.
The 21-year-old chemistry graduate committed suicide by hanging herself at her residence in Salem, 380km from Chennai, on Monday, 10 days after morphed nude pictures of her were posted twice along with her father's mobile number. The pictures were sent to her cousin's WhatsApp account as well.
The Salem Police, on Wednesday, finally arrested a 21-year-old textile worker for allegedly uploading morphed pictures of the young woman on Facebook , The Hindu reported.
The accused, Suresh, who lived in the same neighbourhood as the woman, morphed the picture and posted it on Facebook out of spite after the 21-year-old turned him down.
The woman’s family was looking for a match for her when the picture first appeared, the Hindustan Times report said.
