
In a shocking incident, a pack of strays attacked and carried away a one-year-old from inside the house where the infant was sleeping. The dogs dragged the child from inside till the fence of the house, in Chavara, Kollam.
The incident took place when the grandmother of the infant went out to fetch water after putting the child to sleep. On hearing the sounds she came and saw that pack of strays had attacked the kid and was trying to take him away.
However, grandmother managed to rescue the child, Abhimanyu. The boy is admitted to a Kollam District hospital with 19 serious injuries, but his condition is stable.
Stray dog menace in the state peaked from June to October. The strays attacked over 31, 000 persons during the period and three persons died from the attack. The issue became a topic of debate after a 64-year-old woman was mauled to death by a pack of strays at Pulluvila in Thiruvananthapuram.
Following this Supreme Court appointed a committee to study the problem, and it slammed the state government for inaction leading to huge increase in stray population. The issue was posing a great threat to lives of humans and livestock forcing people to kill the strays. The committee headed by former High Court Justice S Siri Jagan said the people are resorting to massive culling as they are aggrieved by the inaction of authorities to contain the menace.
