Road accident in Karnataka claims lives of 11

Synopsis

Eleven members of a family, including an eight-year-old boy and six women, lost their lives when a state-owned transport bus rammed their vehicle on Sunday evening.

 

The accident took place near Harlapur Cross in Gadag district when the family was returning from a marriage function in Koppal district.  A KSRTC bus, that departed from Hubbali enroute to Hospet, rammed the Maruti Omni van in which the family was travelling back home.

 

Ten out of 11 people died on the spot while one of the passengers succumbed to the injuries on the way to the nearby hospital. The deceased, including a child, six women and four men, belonged to the family of Shankaragouda Somanagouda in Gadag district.

 

The van was severely damaged due to the impact of the collision and the bodies had to be removed using a crane.

 

According to a senior police official, “The driver and conductor of the bus fled the spot after the accident.”

 

As a result of the accident, vehicular movement was affected for over two hours on National Highway 63.
