Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam (PDK) party held a protest in Chennai on Friday against the sale of Gangajal saying that Ganges River is highly polluted, and sale of its ‘holy’ water can spread fatal diseases across the country.
Under a scheme launched by the central government, holy water from Gangotri and Rishikesh were made available at 809 post offices across the nation. The Indian Postal Department had begun the sale of Gangajal for religious purposes on 11 July.
According to reports, members of the PDK party protested outside the Anna Salai post office and shouted slogans against the central government.
One of the protesters, who told ANI that the water being sold was impure and not safe for consumption, was later arrested by the police.
