Navy officer who threatened to rape 16-year-old girl on Facebook, jailed

Synopsis

He has been sentenced to two years jail term. The officer will also have to pay Rs 15,000 as fine.

It is reportedly the first of the Facebook-related cases that was taken up and investigated in 2010.


The police arrested Dilip Kumar Sinha, a Lieutenant deputed at the Colaba naval base in Mumbai based on a complaint filed by the parents of the victim.


He was picked up by the Hyderabad CID's Cyber Crime wing, which with the help of Facebook was able to gather all evidence including his location.


He was found guilty of child sexual abuse under 67, 67-B (c) (d) of Information Technology Act, 2000, and sexual harassment under Section 509 of IPC.


According to the Deccan Chronicle report, the case was one of the earliest detected Facebook related offences in India.
