Namma Metro works damage Vani Vilas Hospital

Synopsis

Construction to connect the Bengaluru Metro from Puttenahalli to Majestic is currently in progress. In this route, A Metro station is being constructed near KR Market, 40 feet underground.

However, this construction seems to have damaged the nearby Vani Vilas Hospital. Large cracks have become visible on several walls in the hospital, leading to fears of a collapse.

The ongoing tunnelling underground is being blamed for these cracks. Hospital authorities believe that the tunnelling creates vibrations in the ground, which cause cracks in buildings, particularly old buildings.

A deep crack has been discovered in the labour ward and supporting columns have been erected to reinforce the roof. Hospital personnel have also shifted 60 beds out of the ward.

The move has increased the hardship of pregnant women. Earlier the X-ray, scanning and other facilities related to labour were in the same location. Since the shift, women have to move to multiple locations in the hospital for scanning and other related diagnosis and treatments.

Metro engineers have denied the allegations, claiming that the cracks were to be expected, as the building is very old. They put the blame on rain water accumulation.

However, they have assured that they will get the walls repaired.
