If the Haji Sir Ismail Sait Masjid committee does decide to stick to its decision, then soon the Iftar delight brought on by the temporary food stalls on Mosque Road in Fraser Town during the month-long Ramzan festival will become history.
The committee has announced that this year it will not allow food stalls and shops to be put up on the pavements as it severely inconveniences local residents.
Aslam Fazal, member of Haji Sir Ismail Sait Masjid committee told Deccan Herald that the decision was taken after several residents and the people visiting the mosque complaint of inconvenience.
"Traffic congestion is the main culprit. As it is a main road, there is heavy vehicular movement and hundreds of people visit the mosque during the holy month and they are put to hardships as thousands of people visit the stalls. Our priority is not to hinder people coming to the mosque,” Fazal told DH.
The mosque committee also has asked the BBMP and the local police to ensure that the ban on food stalls in strictly followed. For the food lovers, this would be a big letdown.
Stacy Paul, a homemaker and a resident of Cooke Town told The Hindu:
“I was looking forward for this month. My friends and I visit the food stalls on Mosque Road every year. I know of my friends in Chennai who plan a trip to the city just so that they can feast on Mosque Road. This is a disappointing development."
The holy month of Ramzan begins from June 7. Last year too, the mosque committee had passed a similar order, however, later they were forced to take it back.
In the meantime, the food lovers can visit the eateries and shops on the Mosque Road stretch as they are expected to be open for longer hours.
