Madras HC verdict: Will DMK emerge victorious, just like it did in 1988?

Synopsis

Madras High court is expected to hear the petition filed by DMK. The court verdict can go against the AIADMK. Will this tussle help Stalin?

Stalin, who is the leader of the opposition approached the Madras High Court and filed a PIL on four points challenging the appointment of Edappadi K Palaniswami. It is reported that the rebel- AIADMK members also have raised their objection on the Tamil Nadu assembly trust vote.

Amid chaotic scenes involving DMK members, who are the opposition, the EPS government won the trust vote by a huge margin. A total of 122 AIADMK MLAs voted for Palaniswami, and 11 votes were cast by rebel AIADMK leader and former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and his supporters.

All eyes are now set on the High Court verdict as it will now decide the next course of action for the entire state. Now what remains to be seen, is whether all of it will be a repeat of 1988.

Almost 30 years back, the then Chief Minister  Janaki was thrown out of power 23-days after winning the trust vote.

The trust vote was declared null and void after it was found that the 1988 confidence motion was rigged by then Speaker P H Pandian. The Janaki government was dismissed using Article 356 and elections were held in 1989, which brought the DMK back into power under the leadership of M Karunanidhi after over 13 years.

Fast forward to 2017, today once again another DMK leader is at the helm of history. Stalin has been leading the onslaught against the AIADMK. The DMK under him has emerged not only as a strong opposition, but it stands a strong chance to even win the elections and form the next government in Tamil Nadu.
