Swamiji enforces alcohol prohibition in Karnataka town

Synopsis

A local Swamiji, with the support of villagers, has enforced alcohol prohibition in Nimbaala The Swamiji is now hoping to make the town free from open defecation.

Nimbaala town, situated in Alanda Taluk of Kalburgi district in Karnataka, has enforced alcohol prohibition for three years now, apparently with the agreement of all the villagers.

A religious leader, Shantalinga Swamiji, the head of local mutt, is said to be the driving force behind this. The Swamiji had threatened the villagers that he would only return to the village mutt if all villagers agreed to enforce prohibition in the town.

The locals soon forced authorities to close all liquor shops in the town.

After his alcohol experiment in Nimbaala, the Swamiji is showing interest in making the town–free from open defecation, in tune with the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan of the Union Government.
