The Cauvery River, which originates from the Kodagu district of Karnataka, has dried up, leading to fears of a drought in the district.
For the first time in many decades, three taluks in Kodagu have received very little rain. If the situation continues, the entire district will be soon declared as drought-hit.
Records state, June 1 until September 12, the district has received only 1449.72 mm rainfall.
But the district needs 2219.20 mm water, which is the average rainfall every year. Thus, currently, the district is facing a 35 to 48 percent deficiency in rains.
Surprisingly, though the Cauvery originates from Kodagu, the people of this district did not take part in any protests when the Supreme Court asked Karnataka to release water to Tamil Nadu.
