320 Karnataka prisoners to be released for 'good conduct'

Synopsis

The male prisoners who were in the jail for 14 years and female prisoners who were imprisoned for ten years and possessed a good conduct will be released soon according to the new guidelines, said the Karnataka Law Minister, T B Jayachandra.

The Karnataka Governor, however, had earlier objected the criteria followed in the release of prisoners between 2006 and 2015. Consequently, for about nine years, prisoners were not released on the grounds of good conduct shown in jail.

It was only during the last year; Governor Vajubhai R Vala had approved the list of 253 prisoners submitted by the government.

As per ruling of Supreme Court, the state government had modified guidelines to release those prisoners, serving life incarceration and duly issued a notification after that.

Now, as per new guidelines in force, the state government had prepared and submitted a list of 320 prisoners, which is awaiting approval of the governor of Karnataka.
