In Bengaluru, an increasingly common issue is foreign students who come to the city on a student’s visa, but remain back long after the visa expires. Police reports indicate that such students are often involved in criminal and illegal activities. In a bid to check this growing issue, Karnataka Home Minister Dr. G Parameshwara has said that the concerned colleges will be held responsible if their students’ visa was expired.

“The colleges always file the details of all the records of the students, including the expiry of visa. Hence we’re thinking of engaging such colleges to find foreigners who are staying here after the expiry visa," Dr. G Parameshwara told the media after a meet.

However, when it comes to the issue of correcting the issue, Karnataka faces several legal hurdles. A major hurdle is that fact that such matters come under the ambit of the central government, not the state. Citing this fact, the home minister expressed his helplessness to probe the issue further.
The minister stated that the Home department had already obtained the details of foreigners whose visas were expired and would be sending the details to the Ministry of External Affairs and the concerned embassies.
