Disruptive disorder among children is on the rise in Bengaluru

Synopsis

Timely intervention by psychiatrist can help such behaviours. The child will be evaluated and his/her behavioural treatment plan will be prepared.

Is your child abusive, does he or she bite; does your child have the tendency of inflicting injuries on it? Then it is better you check with the experts or else it will be a bit too late. This disruptive disorder syndrome will lead them as trouble makers in society.

The doctors have observed that children who have symptoms like aggression towards siblings, animals, inflicting pain on animals, destruction of properties, not attending schools, inflicting injuries on own self, should not be ignored.

The doctors say that a number of such cases are being observed. Few parents from Bengaluru have even stated that their children are found to be less attentive in schools and are very aggressive.

"Such kids will slowly develop this kind of behaviour and its social skills will also be at stake. These kids will turn out be very problematic to the society once they cross their teenage," said Dr John Vijay Sagar, Additional Professor, Child Psychology, NIMHANS.

Timely intervention by psychiatrist can help such behaviours. Parents who would notice any of such disturbing attitude or behaviour should consult mental health experts immediately. The child will be evaluated and his/her behavioural treatment plan will be prepared.  Parents will be given training to handle such problematic children at home and schools should also be kept in loop.

"A complete behavioural therapy which involves rewarding the child for positive behaviour and explaining the consequence about bad behaviour will get to see positive result," said Dr Chandrashekhar, Member, State Mental Health Authority.

Extreme punishment or completely ignorance can sometimes turn the child into a drug addict and an anti-social element in the society, he observed.
