The Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi (KVVES), a platform of merchants and proprietors of commercial establishments in the state, alleged that the fire that broke out at SM Street in Kozhikode following which 15 shops were gutted was the result of a conspiracy.

"There is a conspiracy behind the incident. There are reports that a person was spotted escaping from the place after setting the shops on fire. Mobile phone visuals also showed a person wearing a white shirt and dhoti fleeing the spot," KVVES state president T Naseeruddin said.

Every fire accident that took place in SM Street over past years was part of the conspiracy. None of the investigation reports on fire in the area ever came out. If there is some extra space behind a store, it is for sure that the store will be gutted. Many such incidents will take place in the area within one year, he said.
