Lose weight, get plum posting: Chikkamagaluru SP tells his cops

Synopsis

Cops told to lose 5kgs weight to avail transfer offer  A policeman's duty involves a lot of pressure and stress; heart diseases are common among the force

Only if the police are fit then only can you imagine swift action in case of crime. Often cops are taunted for their potbellies and rotund figure while on the job. And it becomes an embarrassing story when thieves or rowdy sheeters escape because the police were too slow to catch them.

Keeping all this and the police force’s morale in mind, the Chikkamagaluru district Superintendent of Police K. Annamalai has announced an incentive for the men under his charge. According to a report in The Hindu, the constables and head constables of Chikkamagaluru district have been offered a posting to the police station of their choice if they were to lose 5kgs by April. All the men who are willing to take up this challenge need to register along with their present height and body weight.

In addition to this, SP Annamalai has also placed a weighing scale in his chamber to motivate his men. While the declaration certainly has its perks, in this case posting to the station of their choice, Chikkamagluru cops aren’t the first ones to undergo a weight loss schedule.

There have been reports of how policemen is different states were asked to shed the pounds and their hanging bellies. Some were made to go on a diet and some were asked to take up yoga and running. For their efforts, in many cases, monetary rewards were given to those cops who managed to reduce weight efficiently and even maintain it.

Not only this, in December last year, a report from TOI Kolkata says how a retired paramilitary officer had filed a case in the Kolkata High Court against cops with flabby tummies. In his PIL, the officer cited the Police Act, 1861. According to its Article 7, if a police personnel is found to be unfit, he or she can be suspended, or even sacked.

The job of a policeman involves a lot of pressure and is quite stressful. Sometimes even the hours they work are not exactly favourable and so eating at odd hours of the day, not following a proper diet, running the risk of diabetes and heart diseases is common among the police force. So what SP Annamalai is doing is certainly commendable.
