Chennai lawyers continue with their strike

Synopsis

Around 100 advocates staged a demonstration on Thursday at the Madras High Court covering their mouth with black ropes as a part of their protest against recently amended rules to the Advocates.

It has been three days already since the advocates started protesting against the revised rules. The protest also led to a brief traffic disruption in the busy NSC Bose Road in the locality.

The lawyers also stayed away from courts in response to the call given by the Madras High Court Advocates Association. A section of lawyers attended the court proceedings in Chennai.

In Madurai, members of the High Court Association abstained from courts. The lawyers are demanding the withdrawal of recently amended rules to the Advocates Act, which among others provides for disciplinary action against erring lawyers.

The court has appointed a five-judge committee to hear the grievances of the lawyers over the amended rules.
