Former prime minister HD Deve Gowda has gone on an indefinite hunger strike protesting against the "unjust" decision by the Supreme Court on the Cauvery water issue.
“Supreme Court decision on the Cauvery issue is nothing less than a death sentence to Karnataka," the 83-year-old told the media, while announcing his decision on Friday near the Gandhi statue in Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru.
The apex court on Friday ruled that the Karnataka government would have to release 6,000 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu for six days.
According to sources, the veteran politician on early Saturday morning went to Karanji Anjaneya Temple and Kote Venkataramana Swamy Temples in Basavanagudi and offered prayers.

Elaborate security arrangements are in place in Bengaluru, where six companies of Rapid Action Force, three of Border Security Force, three Sashasthra Seema Bal, one Indo-Tibetian Border Police, one company of Central Industrial Security Force, 45 platoons of Karnataka State Reserve police and 30 platoons of City Armed Reserve have been deployed.
