Bengaluru learns green lessons, keeps Lalbagh clean despite flower show

Synopsis

The 205th edition of Lalbagh Flower Show had around 3.6 lakh visitors. 5 lakh flowers exhibited at the show will be composited to enhance fertility of the garden. BBMP collected ₹25,000 fine from vendors for littering.

The 205th edition of the Lalbagh Flower Show came to an end on January 29. This bi-annual event is hosted every year during Republic Day and Independence Day of India. This show draws lakhs of visitors and the primary concern for the authority is litter spread by the visitors.

However, this recent edition of the flower show ended on a different and greener note. This year the organised will compost the flowers that were exhibited at the show to enhance the fertility of the soil. The deputy director of Lalbagh, M.R. Chandrashekar, confirmed that more than 5 lakh flowers including the flowers used for creating Gol Gumbaz, the centrepiece of the show, will be composted.

According to The Hindu , the official coordinating the waste management, Hasiru Dal stated that the amount of dry waste generated by this ten-day long show was 4,100 kg and this will be recycled, and the amount waste generated was 4,800 kg that will be composted at this garden itself.

also placed their enforcement teams to collect fines from vendors who littered during the flower show. The authority collected ₹25,000 from the vendors and also seized approximately 100 kg banned plastic products. BBMP also fined visitors for littering at the venue.

Apart from the authorities, there were volunteers of the citizen’ initiative Beautiful Bengaluru to ensure that the littering is minimal and the show does not leave behind garbage. The quoted Odette Katrak, anchor of this initiative as saying, “This is the third flower show that BB is associated with. We have seen some remarkable results as litter levels on lawns and roads are down by over 60-70%."

Lalbagh Flower Show is one of the biggest events in the city that witnessed approximately 3.6 lakh people on its latest edition. One of the biggest highlights of any public event of this magnitude is the littering caused by the exhibitors, visitors and vendors.

To minimise littering during such events, a joint effort between the organisers and authority is must and also visitors’ cooperation is inevitable. These excellent measures adopted at the 205th edition of the flower show displayed that the city is indeed becoming environmental-friendly and capable of hosting large scale events.
