Yesterday, BBMP continued the demolition drive in Yelahanka, Mahadevapura and Rajarajeshwari Nagar.
A house owner, who had performed his house warming ceremony just a week ago, burst into tears after witnessing his dream house being razed in front of his eyes. While some house owners were seen protesting, many house owners were seen cooperating with BBMP by vacating their houses voluntarily.
Paradoxically, in Mahadevapura, BBMP demolished its own newly-built commercial complex, comprising around 25 shops. The building was built on the storm water drain.
In Yelahanka, the local people alleged that some influential people had diverted the path of storm water drain and have built houses. The officers stopped the demolition operation as the protest intensified. The BBMP officers said that they’ll continue the demolition operation after referring to the records and confirming the allegations.
So far, it hasn't been too difficult for BBMP to demolish the buildings owned by common men. But the real challenge is yet to come. Currently the BBMP is facing the challenge to demolish mansions that belong to top political leaders and influential officers.
It is alleged that Congress leaders like Digvijay Singh, DK Shivakumar, MR Seetharam, Roshan Baig and many other leaders have constructed their mansions illegally.
Yesterday, NR Ramesh, former corporator, released the detailed list of top encroachers. The list comprises around 13 politicians and 71 officers. The name of Sarfaraz Khan, BBMP Joint Commissioner, who is heading the demolition operation, is also in the list. More than 2300 builders have constructed tech-parks, commercial buildings and apartments illegally.
