Bengaluru mayor Gangambike Mallikarjun was fined Rs 500 by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) for presenting a gift wrapped in plastic to Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa.

Yediyurappa was sworn in as the chief minister at the Raj Bhavan in Bengaluru on July 26.

Earlier in 2016, the BBMP had banned plastic after a notification by the Karnataka government to ban single-use plastics in the state.

The BBMP has been strictly enforcing the plastic ban by making punishments for those found manufacturing,  storing, selling, transporting, supplying, distributing and using plastic in the town.

According to the civic authority, plastics are estimated to contribute to 20% of the 4,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste generated every month in Bengaluru.
