40% of people who died on Bengaluru roads in 2018 were pedestrians

According to the Traffic police reports, 40% of people who lost their lives in an accident were pedestrians.

The Bengaluru traffic police data revealed that nearly 40% of people who breathed their last in an accident in the year 2018 were pedestrians. A total number of 684 road accidents were recorded in Bengaluru, in which the number of deaths during the mishap increased to 29 pedestrians. Reportedly, 1,220 pedestrians were injured in road accidents last year.

In 2017, 44% of road accident victims who lost their lives were pedestrians. And, over the past three years, nearly 3700 pedestrians were reported injured, and 1,000 pedestrians were reported dead in road fatalities.

Indiranagar, Halasur, Banaswadi, Shivajinagar, KR Puram, Fraser Town and KG Halli of the Bengaluru city east zone recorded the highest number of road fatalities claiming 111 lives. Vijayanagar, KR Market, Upparpet, Chickpet, Magadi Road, Kengeri, Byatarayanapura and Kamakshipalya of the city's west zone was second was with 75 pedestrians’ lives lost. And, the city's north zone, such as Jalahalli, Peenya, Malleshwaram, Rajajinagar and Yeshwanthpur witnessed 47 deaths of pedestrians. Other places in Bengaluru with a high fatality rate include Electronic City, Madiwala, Yelahanka and Byatarayanapura.

According to reports, about 60% of deaths that befell pedestrians were caused while they were crossing the road.
