A young doctor from Kerala was charred to death in Liberia after his apartment caught fire.
The deceased has been identified as Kottayam native Dr Shane Sam Mathew, 25. Shane was working with the Ganta United Methodist Hospital in northeast Liberia.
The incident happened on the night of September 3. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained but a malfunctioning generator is suspected to have started it.
After studying medicine at the Christian Medical College in Ludhiana, Shane went to Liberia in January as part of social service, and was planning to return in December.
Shane is survived by father George Mathew, mother Elizabeth and sister Sheryl. Arrangements have been made to bring the body back to Kerala soon.
