The Kerala government has ordered the reopening of 466 licensed liquor outlets, which were closed following Supreme Court’s verdict on highway guidelines.

Excise commissioner Rishiraj Singh said that a total of 466 liquor stores, which include retail outlets, toddy shops and beer parlours, will be opened in the state soon.

These licensed liquor stores include 276 wine and beer parlours, 148 toddy shops, 25 Bevco outlets, 10 private clubs, four bars and three military canteens.

TThe outlets could open as soon as today, much to the delight of tipplers in the state ahead of the Onam season. The liquor consumption in the state peaks during the festival period.

Speaking to mediapersons at the excise headquarters on Friday, Rishiraj Singh said he has given the green light to open these outlets. And since these bars can pay the renewal fee online, they would be able to start functioning without any further delay.

The government decision comes after the SC clarification that the distance norm for opening liquor outlets does not apply to municipal areas and on stretches of highways running inside city limits.
