Mother sells earrings after Kerala school demands ₹13,500 for son's TC

Private school managements are preventing students from taking admission in government schools. School managements are demanding exorbitant amount from parents to issue transfer certificate. 

Baby, a native of Jagathy, had approached Vazhutacaud Chinmaya School management seeking transfer certificate for her son. She decided to take admission at AMHS School, Thirumala, as they couldn't afford the fees charged by Chinmaya School, but authorities demanded ₹13,500 for issuing transfer certificate. 

Following this, Baby approached Directorate of Public Instruction. As per her complaint, school management at first asked her to pay pending tuition fees, and she managed to remit ₹7,400 by selling her earrings. But then the school authorities demanded special fees, an additional ₹7,600. When she explained her situation, principal shouted at her and said they wouldn't issue the certificate without getting the money. 

The school principal told Asianet News that it is a private school nd they have to collect fees from students to run their daily affairs, including the salary of teachers. "Why they continued here last year, if they did not have the money to pay fees," the principal asked. 

Based on the complaint, DPI K V Mohankumar has asked Directorate of Distance Education to look into the issue. "We have received several complaints against CBSE schools that they are not issuing certificates to students seeking transfer to government schools," Mohan Kumar said. 

The DPI also said that transfer certificate is not mandatory for seeking admission to government schools.
