
Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala, features on the new list of 30 cities announced for development as smart cities under the Centre's Smart City Mission.
Bengaluru (Karnataka), Amaravati (Andhra Pradesh) and Puducherry (UT) also figure on the list. The latest additions take the number of cities selected for part-financing by the Centre under the scheme to 90, according to a PTI report.
Announcing the new list of smart cities at an event in New Delhi, Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said that 45 cities contested for the 40 available smart city slots but only 30 were selected to ensure feasibility and workable plans.
Other cities that made to the third round of the competition include Tiruppur, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Tiruchirappalli (all Tamil Nadu), Karimnagar (Telangana), Naya Raipur (Chhattisgarh), Rajkot (Gujarat) and Patna (Bihar).
An investment of Rs 57,393 crore has been proposed under Smart City Mission. Under the project, the Centre will provide Rs 500 crore to each city over a period of five years to implement various projects.
