Murder convict, who jumped parole 25 years ago, returns to jail as he has cancer

A murder convict has returned to the Poojappura central jail in Thiruvananthapuram 25 years after he jumped parole, much to the surprise of the jail authorities.

Nazar (55), who is suffering from cancer, turned up at the Poojappura jail on Wednesday evening. He informed the authorities who he was and that he wanted to spend the rest of his life there. The jail superintendent admitted him back after checking the records.

Hailing from Mattancherry in Kochi, Nazar was convicted in the sensational Abu murder case along with four others in April 1991. Some theatre owners and an actor were also reportedly involved in the case.

Nazar, who is a bachelor, went absconding while on a 30-day parole in December 1992. He spent a few years in Mumbai, before escaping to Saudi Arabia and surviving doing odd jobs there. 

He returned to Kerala in 2012 after he lost his job in the Nitaqat program by the Saudi government. Nazar, who was staying with his brother's family, was then diagnosed with cancer.

Nazar undertook some treatment including two surgeries but returned to the prison as he did not want to be a burden to his brother and his family. The police said his health is deteriorating and he will have to continue treatment in jail.
