A 17-year-old girl, who was set ablaze by her spurned lover in Pathanamthitta, succumbed to injuries at a hospital in Coimbatore on Saturday.

Shari, a native of Kadammanitta, had suffered 80 per cent burns after her jilted lover Sajil, 20, set her on fire on 14 July, in a crime that shocked the state.

It is understood that the two were in a relationship for some time but Shari had recently decided to end it. The incident happened on Friday evening when Shari was alone at home. Sajil, who was in the area, asked Shari to meet him but she refused to. Enraged, he barged into her house, poured petrol on her and set her ablaze.

The girl was initially admitted to the Pathanamthitta general hospital and later shifted to the Kottayam Medical College, she had to be airlifted to a hospital in Coimbatore later.

Sajil was absconding after the incident but was arrested the next day. He is undergoing treatment at the Kottayam Medical College for the burns he suffered during the incident.
