A Kerala man murdered his teenage son, who was allegedly a drug addict, before committing suicide in North Paravur near Kochi on Wednesday.
The Paravur police recovered a suicide note from Pavanan, 66, in which he owned up to the murder-suicide and stated he was despondent by his violent son Manoj, 26, who he claimed was addicted to drugs and alcohol.
Pavanan, an ex-serviceman, attacked and murdered Manoj using a sharp-edged weapon at their residence in Parayakadu, according to the police. The murder is estimated to have happened between 4 pm on Tuesday and 7 am on Wednesday.
“Pavanan along with his two sons and wife had shifted to the new house at Parayakadu from Cherai only three months back. The attack might have happened on Tuesday evening when Manoj’s mother and elder brother had gone to attend a function at a relative’s house in Aluva,” a Deccan Chronicle report quoted a police official as saying.
Pavanan committed suicide by hanging himself on Wednesday morning. His body was found by a relative who came to visit the house. The police said he was depressed and anxious over his son becoming an addict to drugs and liquor.
“Manoj used to take money from the family and even had a case in Palakkad. As per the suicide note, the father was depressed over his son’s way of life,” the cop added.
In a similar incident reported from Thiruvananthapuram in June, a family murdered a youth for allegedly troubling the family under the influence of drugs.
The Parassala police arrested the parents and younger brother of Santhosh, 25, after they confessed to murdering him by throwing acid on his face and hitting him with an iron rod.
